The Prayers of 21 Years
I held a tiny baby's
hand, one day many years ago. And said a slilent prayer
over him, for a future we didn't know.
I watched a
little boy go off, for his first day of school. And
said another silent prayer, that he'd learn all their
rules.
I prayed out loud each and every time, he
drove off in my car. And fought the fear that welled in
me, that he'd always return unharmed.
Then I sent
him off to college, and up went another prayer. That
he'd succeed in all his dreams, this little boy whose life
I'd shared.
Now I sit and wait for my
son to come home, whispering a prayer over joyful tears.
That the man who returns, will know in his heart
How much I've loved him for 21
years.
