FAQ's

What is HTML & XHTML? :

HTML stands for Hypertext Markup Language, it is the language that web sites are written in. XHTML stands for Extensible Hypertext Markup Language, it is a temporary language that replaced HTML, it is similar to HTML, yet has very stringent formatting rules as does XML, which is earmarked as the “next” internet language. XML is the future language, it is now in use but still being improved, it is much more flexible than HTML and can be used in handheld devices or even household devices at home. LSW uses XHTML as it is the latest standard and I try to keep up with technology.

What is CSS? :

CSS is a language created for formating text in a manner far more flexible then HTML. Using external CSS I can create sites that can be quickly changed, they are much smaller and therefore faster loading and far more usable for those with handicaps.

What does Accessibility mean? :

Accessibility is a concept that means simply - to create web sites that are accessible to all users. Most people use it when speaking of users with a disability, but it covers all forms of people, surfing habits and equipment - so making sites that do not keep the disabled or those with some form of illness, injury, age or simply some form of hardware that keeps them from visiting and using the web site.

What is JavaScript? :

JavaScript is a scripting language developed by Netscape to be added to and extend the abilities of HTML. It helps make sites more interactive. Used for banners, picture rollovers, navigation, animation and allot more. This should not be confused with “Java” from Sun, this is a Programming language not related to JavaScript in any way.

What is a Meta Tag? :

Meta Tags are codes placed between the head tags of a web page. These are read by the browsers and search engine spiders/crawlers/robots to collect info about the page. Not all read them, but many, and more each day. Often include file name, copyright, file language, date, keywords, description and other such info portions.

What are Keywords? :

Keywords are those words that best describe your site. Place yourself in the shoes of a surfer, who wants what you offer. How does he find you? he types in products or words that describe what he wants, these same words need to be on your site so that a search engine has them and lists your web site. Also think of key phrases, like not just “webdesign” (that will get you a list of a few thousand!), but also “International web design in the German language”, if that is typed in, it will give a search list far smaller than just web design.

What are Dynamic sites? :

Traditionally sites are single pages written in HTML and placed of a server with links that connect them. These are called static sites. They are difficult to maintain when large and when a site has to have flexibility for changing stocks and prices, for example a e-commerce site. Dynamic sites are created by using Perl, ASP, PHP, Python or Java. A code from these languages is placed on a server and called up by a link, this program then writes a HTML page that is downloaded to a users browser. The site only exists for that time period, when you leave the site, the page vanishes. This way each time the page is created for a visitor, it calls up the latest info from say a Data bank, so it shows the latest price, though the price may have changed just minutes ago. One only needs to change the price in the databank, rather than change each HTML page that quotes the price. This should not be confused with DHTML. This is a HTML type of static page, but uses invisible layers to show and hide graphics or text.

Homepage, Homesite......what is the difference? :

Home pages are actually the first or index page of a web site. The link “Home” returns you there. Homesite is the site you own. It is your private place on the web. Often miss named by those new to the web as Hompage. Homesite is the whole shebang. Homepage is just that, the main page, one page of a homesite.

What is Flash? :

Flash is a top line vector animation program from Macromedia.
